Getting paid to work out, NFT loans and social impact

PS Don't miss our event this evening!

Happy last Wednesday of April, frenz! Whether you're celebrating the end of the month with more time spent outdoors basking in the sun, or indoors binging Selling Sunset, we hope you're ending this month in a way that feels momentous to you. As for us, we're wrapping up this month and our Climate theme with an incredible Speaker Series this evening, make sure you don't miss it! We'll be kicking May off fresh with our new theme: non-profit, social impact and philanthropy. Oh, and yes we also are binging Selling Sunset.

Quip of the Week

Speaker Series tonight: Crypto x Climate

Join us this evening at 6pm PT/ 9pm ET as we speak with two amazing founders building in the climate space as they share their opinions on the intersection of crypto and climate, and the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The Latest

Twitter's newest boss

Obviously everyone and their mom is talking about how Elon Musk won the bid to take Twitter private for "free speech." Yes, this isn't explicitly a web3 story, but given that a majority of the crypto community lives on Twitter, and sole ownership, like decentralized ownership, has huge implications on moderation, censorship and freedom of speech, we thought it be worthwhile to include it as food for thought. Setting aside judgement for now, Elon's plans include removing spam and minimizing content moderation, which may/may not differ from how some people would approach building decentralized social applications.  Interestingly, Twitter still has its separate project "Bluesky" that is unaffected by Elon's purchase, with the exact goal of building a decentralized standard for social media. The question becomes: would you rather a billionaire be at the helm of such rules and protocols, or a smart contract?

Move-to-earn: The newest kid on the block

Play-to-earn, learn-to-earn, and now for all you Peloton and HIIT lovers there is move-to-earn! Not unlike Carrot's revolutionary program all those years ago that gave you rewards to meet your step goals, a new web3 project called STEPN plans to tokenize physical movement. To get started, you need to purchase a pair of NFT sneakers. As you engage in physical activity (ie running, walking, jogging, etc) the app tracks it and converts it to in-game tokens. What's fascinating in these X-to-earn models is how passive income can be generated through actions (learning, gaming, moving) that have traditionally not been linked to earning potential. It's early days for move-to-earn but we hope some will notice this experiment and make moves of their own towards creating even more income opportunities for others!

Getting a loan by using Kawhi's Game 7 buzzer beater as collateral

You may not know Vancouver-based company Dapper Labs by name but you probably know it from something they built that contributed to the monsoon that was the NFT craze: NBA Top Shot. Now, they're helping bring a new industry to life: NFT lending. They recently invested in Flowty, an idea that came from a user and crypto whale of NBA Top Shot, as he thought about how users could get cash by leveraging NFTs as collateral. It's early days but it's yet another compelling potential use case for NFTs as we think towards the future.

Deep dive: from climate to non-profit, social impact and philanthropy

We are excited to transition from Climate x Crypto to talking more broadly about non-profit, social impact and philanthropy x Crypto throughout May. This week, we thought we'd highlight a few impact DAOs in both the social impact and the environmental impact space, though you'll see we are just at the tip of the iceberg.

  1. Regen Network - aims to reverse climate change with digital carbon and regenerate ecosystems

  2. Big Green DAO - an initiative by Elon Musk's younger brother to be the first non-profit led philanthropic DAO focused on food insecurity and agriculture

  3. impactMarket - an initiative that empowers organizations to create their own UBI programs

  4. PopcornDAO - generates competitive returns on your crypto assets while funding social impact organizations across environment, education and open source

  5. DreamDAO - focused on empowering Gen Z to explore web3 and change the world with it
